After months of rumors, Apple held its highly-anticipated September event- “California Streaming” event on September 14, 2021. Apple announced a pair of new iPads, the ninth-generation iPad and the sixth-generation iPad Mini.

Both iPads feature new versions of Apple’s Bionic chip, new camera-related features, and support for accessories like the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard, among other improvements. Apple also announced that iPadOS 15, the new version of its tablet operating system, will launch Monday, Sept. 20. Let’s look through the details to pick out what’s new about the iPad 9 first.

The iPad 9 is on the way with a number of solid upgrades. The A13 Bionic chip is the new brain of the iPad 9, which also features more capable cameras. The biggest of those camera tricks is Center Stage, which lets the iPad’s selfie camera follow you as you move.

And A13 Bionic chip offers 20% faster performance on CPU, GPU and Neural Engine.

Live Text performance in the iPad 9 is faster, which is great for those taking advantage of the new iPad iOS 15 feature that lets you easily pull text out of photos. You can also expect better gaming and multitasking performance.

The new iPad’s many features remain largely unchanged over the last model. Like the 8th-generation iPad it uses a Retina display, it’s still the same size—with a 10.2-inch, 6.8 inches by 9.8 inches by 0.29 inches (WHD) . But the new addition here is True Tone -a feature found on higher-end iPads that uses an ambient light sensor to detect your environment and adjust the tone of the display accordingly, for a more comfortable eye-friendly viewing experience.

And the new iPad has the same external features, including a home button with Touch ID, lightning port, and headphone jack. The 32.4 Watt Hour battery still provides up to 10 hours of battery life.

The new iPad also gets support for Apple’s tablet accessories, though it’s something of a half-step. The iPad 9 works with the Apple Smart Keyboard and the first-generation Apple Pencil.
